Cell Analogy Book PBL - Entire Project Due October 9
In this unit you will be expected to:
Dear Irvin Biology Student! You are requested to write a children’s book for the students at Crosby Elementary. Pick a theme for your story which must be an analogy to a cell, its organelles, and functions. Make sure your book is EASY to UNDERSTAND as you are writing for elementary students and include pictures for your book. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND STAY ON TRACK WITH DEADLINES POSTED UNDERNEATH VIDEO.
Watch the below video as you create your book to help you learn about the structures and function of the cell
- compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
- analyze and evaluate scientific explanations concerning the complexity of the celL

Watch the below video as you create your book to help you learn about the structures and function of the cell
CHAPTER 1 - Prokaryotic Cells (October 1 - October 2)
- create a cover page: draw a labeled diagram of a prokaryotic cell (must include the parts listed)
- research the function (click on BLUE BUTTON BELOW) of the following which are found in a prokaryotic cell: cell wall, cell membrane, ribosome, DNA, cytoplasm, flagella. MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DEFINITIONS IN YOUR OWN WORDS AND THAT YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE WRITING!!!!
- pick a theme for your story (example: a classroom, a football team, a favorite tv show etc). Then for each of the above organelles you need to create an analogy comparing the function of that organelle to something that has a similar function in the theme of your story. YOU CANNOT USE THE ANALOGIES FROM THE VIDEO ABOVE. Write your answers in the document provided
- Complete the bacteria cell tutorial and game - you will have a quiz on bacteria cells when this chapter is due.
Good Video for Eukaryotic Cells
CHAPTER 2 - Eukaryotic Cells (October 3 - October 7)
- Create a cover page: draw a labeled diagram of an animal cell and a labeled diagram of a plant cell
- research the function of the following (cell wall, cell membrane, ribosome, DNA, cytoplasm, flagella, Nucleus, chloroplast, mitochondria, vacuole, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi body, lysosome). You will notice some of these you already researched from chapter 1.
- Create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting plant and animal cells
- complete the cell tutorial and game - you will have a quiz on eukaryotic cells when this chapter is due
CHAPTER 3 - COMPARISON OF CELLS (October 7)
- CREATE A 3-CIRCLE VENN DIAGRAM COMPARING AND CONTRASTING PLANT, ANIMAL AND BACTERIA CELLS
- Pre-AP: In addition to this you must research the endosymbiotic theory. Explain what it is, and how it relates to eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and write a half a page which will be included in chapter 3 of your book.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER (October 8 - 9)
- THE WORK YOU HAVE DONE SO FAR IS YOUR DRAFT. USING THE CONSTRUCTION PAPER PROVIDED (OR YOU CAN TYPE IT ON THE COMPUTER) CREATE A 3 CHAPTER BOOK THAT INCLUDES ALL YOUR ANALOGIES, PICTURES AND VENN DIAGRAMS.
